As a small independent consultancy, CGO Ecology Ltd was focused primarily on amphibian and reptile consultancy in its early years; but now that our business is much larger, the breadth of our capability has grown. We have tended to subcontract out most of our bat work until now, using the services of other friendly local consultancies and freelancers. However, we do get offered a lot of bat survey work, and we decided it was time to acquire our own in-house expertise and technical capability.
So that's why we recently employed Senior Ecologist Noel Bergin - an experienced and licensed bat worker with full survey, disturbance and handling capability. For bat work, it's all about the kit though; so we've invested in an Echometer EM3+ bat detector and recorder, with its inbuilt recording functionality, live sonogram display, and £800 price tag.
The EM3+ combines heterodyne, time expansion and frequency-division functionality, and records on an SD card - all very handy, and no need for a separate recorder. For surveys requiring multiple personnel, we can also field a team of bat workers with a range of kit including AnaBat, Batbox Duet, and Pettersson detectors.
